Day Three – Sunday, October 16: Depart Reykjavik for the south coast – Northern Lights (B)

This morning we depart Reykjavik and drive through the fertile farming grounds of the south, passing through small villages before we come to the first highlight of the day; The Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Here you will have an opportunity to walk behind this spectacular cascade and really experience the force of the water first hand. Close by we find Skógafoss waterfall where we also stop for a while to take in the scenery. After the waterfalls, we go down to Reynisfjaraand and its black sand beach. Then to the basalt columns and the impressive rock formations of Reynisdrangar that rises from the ocean just off the coast…it’s truly a magical place to visit. We continue to the coastal village of Vík, through a landscape like you have never seen before. After dinner on our own, we will enjoy the rest of the evening viewing the Northern Lights and to recharge for the coming day.

Day Four – Monday, October 17: Glacier walking day (B)
glacier hikingWe start the day at the picturesque Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. If weather permits, we’ll have the opportunity to take an amphibian boat ride between the icebergs. If not available, we can take in the scenery on land and get some incredible phots. From the glacier lagoon, we make our way to Vatnajökull glacier where we prepare for a glacier hike. Our skilled guides will go over all safety features and equipment before we set foot on the glacier. Vikisjökull is an outlet glacier and Europe’s biggest ice cap. On our journey we will come across incredible ice formations, crevasses and the impressive icefalls, where we will see up close how the ancient ice stoically falls hundreds of feet off the mountain top. The Vatnajökull National Park area is one of Iceland’s biggest movie “sets” and known for pictures that have been shot there from Batman Begins, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and, of course, The Game of Thrones. After the glacier hike we’ll start making our way to Skaftafell for our overnight and dinner on our own.

day 5
Day Five – Tuesday, October 18: To the Hot Springs (B)

After breakfast we cross the Hellisheiði mountain pass before reaching the town of Hveragerði (Hveragerdi) where we will start our hike. Hellisheiði is the home of the geothermal power plant that produces electricity for Reykjavik and vicinity. We continue to Hveragerði, a town known for its hot springs and flowers, and start our 3-mile hike that leads us to the beautiful valley of Reykjadalur. In Reykjadalur valley, water from the hot springs mixes with the clear mountain springs creating the ideal temperature for bathing. The valley has an amazing abundance of geothermal phenomena; mud pots, fumaroles and hot springs. After the exotic bath and exploration of these wonders of nature, we hike back down to the town of Hveragerði for our overnight and dinner on our own.

day 6
Day Six – Wednesday, October 19: To Reykjavik (B)

After a leisurely breakfast we board our coach and head back to Reykjavik where we have the afternoon and evening on our own to explore Iceland’s capital and enjoy dinner at one of its many local restaurants, such as the revolving restaurant atop the well-known Perlan’s building with its wonderful view of the city.

day 7
Day Seven – Thursday, October 20: In Reykjavik (B/D)

This morning we will have a tour of the city learning about its history and culture. We start at the Hofdi House where the summit meeting between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev took place in 1986 and changed US/Russian relations at that time. Then to the Old Town center to see the Icelandic Parliament building and Town Hall. We stop by the unusual Perlan Building, which was built on water tanks. We continue with a visit to the Presidential residence built in 1761. And of course no tour of Reykjavik would be complete without a stop at the town of Hafnarfjordur, famous for having one of the largest settlements of elves and other mystical citizens also known as the “hidden folk”. We end at the old fishing harbor where you can depart the tour and spend the afternoon on our e=own and to have lunch there or continue back with our coach to our hotel. Balance of the day and evening on our own.

day 8
Day Eight – Friday, October 21: In Reykjavik (B/D)

Today we depart for the famous Blue Lagoon, located about 30 miles from the city center, a stunning and unique geothermal lagoon that glimmers among the snow caps and lava fields. The Lagoon stays at a comfortable 90 to 95 degrees and is blue because of a blue-green algae that also softens and nourishes the skin with its mineral salts and has been known to do wonders on your muscles, tired from our walks and hikes. We will spend the morning here and you will have all the time you want to relax in the warm waters, take a private bath or even a water massage. Bathing suits, towels and robes are available for rent. Afterwards, we leave Iceland’s most famous natural wonder and return to our hotel where we have the afternoon to relax before our “Farewell to Iceland” dinner.

Day Nine – Saturday October 22: To USA (B)
Tour Ends and transfer to Airport for our flight home.

Our walks- The walks will be at an easy slow to moderate pace, 3 to 3 ½ hours with trails that are of good quality, quite level with limited climbs or descents.
