pomieii 4Day 4, Tuesday, April 7: In Sorrento – Morning Tour to Pompei (B)
Depart the hotel for Pompeii, a part of an ancient Roman city destroyed and buried by the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The remainder of the uncovered city is today buried under the new Pompeii rebuilt many years subsequent to the eruption. Although this tragic event ended the lives of 20,000 Pompeian residents, the ash that buried the town served as a sort of mummification for the entire city. The eruption, which buried the town in ash actually captured a moment in time. Under the ash everything remained as it was at the time of the eruption. Artwork was preserved. Buildings were preserved. Several important clues were left behind.  These clues are the silver lining that can be seen when you visit the ruins at Pompeii. Return to Sorrento for a free evening.

Day 5, Wednesday April 8 – Free Day – Optional Excursion Positano, Amalfi & Ravello (B)
A free day to explore and shop in Sorrento.

ravelloOr take an Optional Tour to some of the most beautiful Amalfi coast scenery. We’ll drive along the spectacular coastline with lush gardens and olive-green slopes, that hover over the clear sea below as we make our way to Amalfi, a charming, peaceful resort town on the scenic Amalfi Coast. It was once one of the four powerful Maritime Republics and today, we explore the narrow alleyways that wind through the town up the slopes between the sea and mountains. We will see excellent examples of medieval architecture with Moorish influence including its ninth century cathedral, Duomo di Sant’ Andrea and the Cloister of Paradise, Chiostro del Paradiso. Besides history and beauty, the town is noted  for great food.  Lunch at one of the local restaurants.  Then travel to Ravello, perched high on the cliffs above Amalfi. Ravello is famous for its views and its gardens. The town was once part of the Republic of Amalfi, now it is a peaceful historic village We start our tour  to its two famous gardens, Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo, where we can wander through the tropical plants and enjoy fabulous views of the coastline. We will also visit its impressive cathedral, the venerable Duomo, dedicated to San Pantaleone. Return to Sorrento  for dinner on our own.

amalfi coastMeet in lobby and board our coach as we travel up the Amalfi Coast. Those who have driven California’s Highway 1 recall its beautiful ocean view in an almost religious breath, as something too magnificent for words. Well, imagine something equally inspiring, and you get the legendary Amalfi Drive. Perhaps such seductive beauty is not entirely coincidental, as the Amalfi are the mythological home of the sultry sirens who captivated Odysseus and his sailors with their bewitching melodies. Along the way we will stop for PIZZA at a local farm house with a brick oven and we will all participate in making our own famous Neapolitan pizza which we will have for lunch along with some local wine.  Continue to Naples for our overnight and dinner on our own.

Day 7, Friday, April 10: In Naples (B/D)
