Tortola in the British Virgin Islands is one of the premier vacationing places in all of the Caribbean, and what better way to see it than with the EHTPS’s own Lee Dion who, with his wife Micki, spend their winters there.
Your stay in Tortola will be at Cane Garden Bay, one of the most picturesque beaches in the British Virgin Islands. Nestled quaintly on the north shore of Tortola, this island village offers a sun-drenched vacation that will be purely relaxing and stress-free. In addition to selected walks and hikes led by Lee, you can enjoy the white sandy beach and fabulous swimming conditions in aquamarine waters. If fishing interests you, venture to the point and enjoy the sport of tarpon fishing right from your beach. Snorkel as close as 50 yards from the edge of the beach where you will be able to see a variety of tropical fish. Or for a more in-depth experience, on a day of leisure, go on a day charter.
At night choose from many open-air beach front restaurants and dine under the stars or listen to a steel drum band while you dance barefoot in a tropical garden restaurant. You could spend a month here and never eat in the same restaurant.
What a unique winter holiday combination … a great tropical spot guided by your own “Locals” (Lee and Micki), many wonderful walks and hikes, time to relax on the beach, great food and all of this with fellow hikers and walkers.

A word about your hikes and walks
Lee and Micki have chosen walks and hikes that are slow to moderate and promises to discuss each day’s planned walk or hike with the group so individuals will be able to determine if they want to take the journey or stay behind and relax. As you can see by the itinerary below, the walks/hikes will be the most part on a slow to moderate pace.
Day One-Saturday, March 11: Depart for Tortola
Depart JFK for St Thomas where you are met and transferred to a ferry for the short ride to the Island of Tortola. Upon arrival, you will be escorted to your reserved accommodations Take to relax and refresh before join Lee and Micki at their home for a welcome cocktail party and welcome dinner as you look over Cane Bay Beach.
Day Two-Sunday, March 12 – In Tortola

Morning walk: Slow to Moderate pace of about 2.5 miles.
Afternoon walk: Own pace for about 2 miles.
Day Three-Monday, March 12 – In Tortola – Trip to Virgin Gorda
After breakfast, we board a ferry to the Island of Virgin Gorda and climb the 1,470 foot Gorda Peak [our climb is about 600 feet] to enjoy the spectacular views. Be sure to bring your bathing suit because in the afternoon we visit the famous “Baths,” a very unusual rock formation with grottos you swim in and climb over.
Morning walk: Moderate pace and relatively easy climb.
Day Four-Tuesday, March 12 – In Tortola
We start the day at Anderson Point with a stop at the “Bat Cave”. The whole area is unique in that it is very primitive..no houses, a virgin forest and an open sea. It is what Columbus first saw upon his arrival here. The afternoon will be spent in town where you can “shop ‘til you drop” as Lee & Micki will take you around town to visit the capital of the BVI, visiting museums, craft shops and pubs.
Day Five-Wednesday, March 12 – In Tortola – A Day of Sailing
Today we board our chartered sailing ship, the “Aristocrat” as we do some “underwater hiking” called snorkelling. We also will visit Norman Island, known as being part of Robert Lewis Stevenson’s story of Treasure Island and where we will visit the Treasure Cave. Lee is promising sightseeing of some very rare and unusual fish including the beautiful Queen Angle Fish. Return in the late afternoon.
Day Six-Thursday, March 12 – In Tortola – Excursion to Peter Island
This morning we will take the ferry to Peter Island and hike to a secluded beach far from civilization. Time to also swim, snorkel and enjoy the beach. Return back in the late afternoon.
Walk: Moderate difficulty because of an incline, but Lee promises a slow pace to make it easy.
Day Seven-Friday, March 12 – In Tortola
Our last hike/walk of the tour is to the Mahogany Forest to enjoy its beautiful canopy. Afternoon at leisure to relax and enjoy Cane Garden Bay (featured in one of Jimmy Buffet’s songs) before we have our farewell cocktail party and dinner with Lee and Miki at a local restaurant overlooking the Bay.
Morning walk: Easy walk of about 2 miles.
Day Eight-Saturday, March 12 – Back home
Today it’s back home as we transfer to the pier to board our ferry to St Thomas. Upon arrival, we are met and escorted to the airport for our flight back to JFK. After clearing Immigration and Customs, we board our coach back to the East End.
