SICILY
April 12-19, 2025

A “White Lotus” & “Godfather” Tour

Sicily tour

Eternal crossroads of the Mediterranean, the gorgeous island of Sicily continues to seduce travelers with its dazzling diversity of landscapes and cultural treasures. It is the great melting pot of the ancient world. Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Normans, French and Spanish have left their mark and contributed to its rich heritage. Whether in the classical perfection of Agrigento’s Concordia Temple, the monumental rubble of Selinunte’s Columns or the rare grace of a dancing satyr statue rescued from Mazara del Vallo’s watery depths, reminders of bygone civilizations are everywhere.

Sicily is also a delectable layer-cake of culinary influences, Sicily’s ancient cuisine continues to rely on a few key island-grown ingredients: shellfish and citrus, tuna and swordfish, pistachios, almonds and ricotta.

Sicily’s varied landscape makes a dramatic first impression. As if its classical heritage weren’t formidable enough, Sicily is bursting at the seams with later artistic and architectural gems. In a short walk around Palermo you’ll see Arab domes and arches, Byzantine mosaics and Norman palace walls. Circle around to southeast Sicily and you’ll find yourself stumbling upon the evocative remains of Arab and Norman castles. These cultural riches remain one of the island’s most distinctive attractions.

Plus we will have an exciting tour up to Mount Etna, a “Godfather” tour and visiting many places featured in the “White Lotus” TV series.

4th day-Tuesday, April 15: To Cefalu, Agrigento & Taormina (B/L/D)
After breakfast we depart for Cefalu (featured in White Lotus). Cefalù, one of the most beautiful evocative destinations on the island. For the Greeks, it was Kephaloidion, “head” or “headland” (most likely referring to its promontory), and the Romans knew it as Coephaledium. The Arabs called it Gafludi, “fortified city with abundant waters.” The town is dominated by a monumental rock rising to a height of about 1,000 feet and its historic Duomo, a gigantic cathedral commissioned by Ruggero II The Norman. There is also much to admire in medieval Cefalù. The Palazzo Maria in Piazza Duomo and the 13th-century Osterio Magno in Corso Ruggero, owned by the Conti Ventimiglia, have two beautiful 13th-century mullioned windows and a 14th-century triple lancet window. This is a visit not to be missed – a place that offers a magnificent glimpse of medieval Sicilian life. After lunch at a local restaurant, we depart for Agrigento, visiting one of the most important Greek historical sites in the world: the breathtaking Valley of the Temples. Even travelers who have visited Athens and Delphi in Greece are awed by the gigantic yet graceful Greek structures that have survived 24 centuries of tormented history. After we proceed to Taormina one of the most beautiful sites in the world with its well-preserved stones and stage and the snow-covered Mount Etna in the background. Dinner at our hotel.

5th day-Wednesday, April 16: In Taormina. Tour to Noto & Siracusa (B)
syracuse sicilyAfter breakfast we depart for Noto (featured in the White Lotus) a magnificent baroque town and is famous for its opulent architecture and beauty. Noto was founded at the time of the fall of Troy. This small town in the south-east was founded again in the 1700s. It is the heart and the starting point for a visit to the valley of the Sicilian Baroque. Its cathedral was perfectly raised and then rebuilt again 10 years later and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A local highlight is Caffe Sicilia, which is rumored to make some of the best gelato in all of Italy. Then visit Syracuse (Siracusa in Italian) to visit the most beautiful Greek colony of Sicily. This area attracted the philosopher Plato and the Apostle Paul. At one time, its naval fleet was feared throughout the Mediterranean. Here our visit will include the famous Latomie of the Garden of Paradise, the Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre, and the Ear of Dionysius known for its extraordinary acoustics. Lunch is on our own before we return to our hotel in the late afternoon for dinner on our own at the hotel or one of the local restaurants.

We will visit the Silvestri Craters – five extinct craters and enjoy their panoramic scenery. Then we will experience a special treat as we have lunch and a wine tasting at the Mt Etna vineyards. The vineyards are a unique wine growing area that has gotten a lot of attention recently. Its dark volcanic soils, high elevation, snow on the top of the mountain for five months of the year and the Mediterranean Sea nearby create singularly distinctive wines. After lunch we proceed back to Taormina to visit the Ancient Greek- Roman Theatre. It is one of the most beautiful sites in the world with its well-preserved stones and stage and the snow-covered Mount Etna in the background. The rest of the afternoon and evening are free for independent activities.

We will conclude our tour with a visit to the Church of San Nicolò, where the wedding scene between Michael Corleone and Apollonia was set. With this tour you can relive the magic of the film and discover the hidden beauty of Sicily! The Hortus Botanicus is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world with no fewer than 4,000 species of plants. With its garden and special greenhouses it has a collection of over 4,000 plant species. It’s a perfect place to continue our  “botanical visit to Holland.” The Hortus was opened by the city council in 1638 – originally as a medicinal herb garden to help combat plague-type illnesses which gripped Europe at the time. Hortus Botanicus gardensIts collection then expanded as Dutch traders bought back exotic plants from all over the world, particularly from South Africa and Asia. There are seven greenhouses on site – including the monumental Palm Greenhouse (1912), a butterfly greenhouse and the modern Three-climate greenhouse (1993) which has desert, sub-tropical and tropical climates. Walking from outside into the hot and humid tropical section is certainly an experience! This evening you are free to enjoy one of the city’s wonderful restaurants.

In the open-air park “Zaanse Schans” we discover how the Dutch lived before industrialization and where we will find several of the 955 remaining windmills in Holland. Plenty of time for taking pictures. For lunch, we will head towards the old fishing port of Volendam that thrives on cheese, wooden shoes and windmill souvenirs. Taste some locally produced typical Dutch cheese at an actual cheese producer close to Volendam. At this location the local cheese master shows you how those famous Gouda and Edam cheeses are actually produced. Next to the cheese producer stands a little clog factory. Here you’ll learn everything about those famous wooden Dutch shoes. After lunch in Volendam we continue to the cozy and intimate 13th century fishermen town called Marken. It’s incredibly easy to navigate, and free maps are available at any ticket window. Dinner is on your own to try some of the charming and exciting Parisian restaurants.

9th Day, Monday, May 6: In Paris: Full day Excursion to Normandy (B/L/D)
After breakfast we board our coach for Normandy on the coast of northern France where Allied troops landed on 5 beaches along the coast as we remember the heroes of the D-Day landings. As we travel to Normandy, our guide will teach us about the region, pointing out sights along the way. They will share stories about World War II, describing the meticulous planning that led up to D-Day and the largest amphibious attack in history. They will also explain how and why some of these carefully crafted plans came undone. Whether you’re a history buff or not, you’re bound to have questions and curiosities about the heavy air and naval bombing and how Allied boats arrived at Normandy on June 6, 1944. In the early light of dawn, the soldiers struggled to reach the beaches. On Utah Beach, they quickly defeated the German forces and joined up with their air support once inland. But, on Omaha Beach, they faced heavy enemy fire in terrain that left them vulnerable; vertical cliffs were another obstacle that led to the loss of life. Despite this, the Allies had control of Omaha Beach, and within a week of D-Day, more soldiers were able to land on Normandy’s beaches and ensure victory. The beaches were code named as Utah, Gold, Juno, Sword and “Bloody Omaha”, which was one of the main invasion points in the great D-Day landings and where we can still see the remnants of hardy German bunkers cast in concrete on the headlands. It’s a sight that leave many with tears in their eyes. We’ll also view the Memorial Peace Museum and the American Military Cemetery, which will be one of our most emotional stops, if not the most emotional. With 10,000 white crosses throughout, the name of a fallen soldier is engraved on each. This huge cemetery will make you aware of the colossal death count of D-Day. You’ll have time to look around the cemetery, visit the wall of the missing and awe-inspiring memorial. Then lunch in Normandy and then board our coach for the return trip to Paris where we have our farewell dinner at our hotel.

10th Day, Tuesday, May 7: Back to the USA (B)
After breakfast, make your way back to the airport on your own for the return trip to the USA.

RMC presents

THREE MEDITERRANEAN ISLANDS

Corsica-Sardinia-Sicily
October 14 – 28, 2023

This tour is now Sold Out

Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily photos

Eternal crossroads of the Mediterranean, these gorgeous and historical islands continue to seduce travelers with their dazzling diversity of landscapes and cultural treasures. It is the great melting pot of the ancient world. Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Normans, French and Spanish have left their mark and contributed to its rich heritage…and of course great food & wine.

CORSICA – Although Corsica has been part of France for more than 200 years, it feels different from the mainland in everything from customs and cuisine to language and character. Jutting from the foaming Mediterranean like an impregnable fortress, Corsica resembles a miniature continent, with astounding geographical diversity. Within half an hour’s drive, the landscape ranges from glittering bays, vibrant coastal cities, and fabulous beaches to saw-tooth mountain ridges, verdant valleys, dense forests and time-forgotten hilltop villages. A visit to Corsica offers tremendously varying opportunities as we delve into the island’s multifaceted history and sampling local delicacies.

SARDINIA – The Island of Idiosyncrasie. As DH Lawrence so succinctly put it: “Sardinia is different.” Indeed, where else but here can you go from near-alpine forests to snow-white beaches? Or find wildlife oddities such as the blue-eyed albino donkeys on the Isola dell’Asinara and the wild horses that shyly roam Giara di Gesturi. The island is also a culinary one-off, with distinct takes on pasta, bread and dolci, its own wines (Vermentino whites, Cannonau reds) and cheeses – including maggoty casu marzu pecorino, stashed away in barns in the mountainous interior. In every way we can think of Sardinia is different, and all the more loveable for it. Sardinia captivates with its wild hinterland, out-of-this-world beaches and endearing eccentricities. Here coastal drives thrill, prehistory puzzles and four million sheep rule the roads.

SICILY – Whether in the classical perfection of Agrigento’s Concordia Temple, the monumental rubble of Selinunte’s Columns or the rare grace of a dancing satyr statue rescued from Mazara del Vallo’s watery depths, Sicily is the reminder of bygone civilizations are everywhere. Sicily is also a delectable layer-cake of culinary influences, and its ancient cuisine continues to rely on a few key island-grown ingredients: shellfish and citrus, tuna and swordfish, pistachios, almonds and ricotta.

Circle around to southeast Sicily and you’ll find a stunning array of baroque architectural masterpieces, from the golden-hued domes and palaces of Noto to the multi-tiered cathedral facades of Ragusa and Modica. Meanwhile, throughout the island you’ll find yourself stumbling upon the evocative remains of Arab and Norman castles. And if you viewed the recent season of the WHITE LOTUS, you will recognize many of the places we will visit that were also featured in the TV series.

These three cultural riches and scenic beauties combine to create a most memorable holiday.

Piana churchWe start our visit to Corsica with a sightseeing tour full of contrasts and stunning scenic discoveries as we journey through Corsican villages with the unique “Calanche de Piana’, which evokes Norwegian fjords if they were found in warmer Mediterranean waters. It offers an outstanding landscape of pink granite rocks shaped over the centuries by changes in the temperature, strong winds and sea spray. A fascinating play of colors unfolds before our eyes: intense blues from the sea, bright light, and the pink, red and orange shades of the granite. Erosion has sculpted the stone into monumental natural artwork. We’ll stop for lunch in this pretty village set in and which overlooks the fabulous Calanche de Piana. We will visit the Bastion de l’Ttendard that dates back to the 15 century and is the highest l’Etendard in France. If there is time, we will also visit the landscaped garden. At about noon, we board our ferry to Sardinia. Upon arrival, we will be met and escorted to our accommodations at the world-famous Carla Di Volpe hotel, where later we will have a Welcome to Sardinia dinner.

6th day- Thursday, October 19: In Sardinia (B/L)
sailboatsAfter breakfast it’s a day of sailing. We have chartered three boats to sail to the islands of the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park. Sailing in silence, we will be able to admire the most fascinating corners of this protected marine park up close. Our mini cruising will be among the islands that embrace La Maddalena and will introduce us to the most beautiful beaches of Spargi, Razzoli, Budelli (with the famous Spiaggia Rosa) and Santa Maria. In Santa Maria, we will stop and have a guided tour. Then continue to sail the La Maddalena archipelago as we return to our starting point. During our sail, we will have a picnic lunch at one of the stops. Bring a bathing suit. If the weather permits, we will be able to take a swim or even do some snorkeling as equipment will be provided. Also, be sure to ask the hotel for a beach towel. Dinner this evening is on your own at any of the hotel’s restaurants.
Note: If the weather is bad, we will substitute a land-based sightseeing tour of the “off-the-beaten” path island sites.

7th day- Friday, October 20: In Sardinia (B/L/D)
Barbagia stone houseThis morning we leave to explore Barbagia (The Sardinian Hinterland) taking an open-air museum and natural park tour. The historic region of Barbagia reveals a terrain rugged yet articulated (perhaps the wildest on the Island), and a world where customs and traditions pair with a generous people. It is a life characterized and preceded by millennia of fascinating history. Barbagia owes its name to the Romans, who called this unconquerable land Barbaria. Today it is both hospitable and rich in beauty. It is jaw-dropping and spectacular, cut by deep, jagged valleys (called codule) that lead towards the sea by piercing the calceous littoral walls. The result is a spectacular landscape characterized by gorges and cliffs. We will see typical stone houses, the characteristic cortes and the artisan workshops and Aritzo, famous for their carved wooden chests, leatherwork and the most valued copper pots and pans that are made in dalla Barbagia di Seulo. We will also have a delightful luncheon “Agriturismo”with its cheeses, meats, cured meats, sweets and typical wines (e.g. Cannonau) and the famous Filu ’e ferru, Sardinian grappa. After lunch, it’s to Orgosolo, cradle of archaic traditions that offers glimpses of enchanting and timeless Sardinia and a walking tour of the old town, a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage site before returning to our hotel for dinner.

8th day- Saturday, October 21: To Sicily – Tour of Cagliari and Overnight ferry (B/L/D)
Cagliari cathedral exteriorAn early morning departure for the ride south to Cagliari, the “City of Sun” that takes its nickname from its mild and sunny climate. After a panoramic drive, we will have lunch at a typical local restaurant, followed by a walking tour in the historic district of Castello, the center of the social, political, cultural, military and religious life of the city from its foundation to the present day. The Castle, founded in the XIII century, contains some of the most important monuments of the city. Our guide will tell us the curiosities related to its history and the different populations that inhabited it. Along the way we will have the opportunity to enjoy beautiful views of the city and the sea from its panoramic terraces. On to the Archaeological Museum, which contains the findings of the most ancient civilizations of the island. Among these, we will see the mysterious Giants of Mont’e Prama, considered the oldest large statues in the entire Mediterranean. After our tour, we will board our overnight ferry and have a simple dinner onboard as we sail to Sicily.
Note that this is a ferry boat and not a Viking cruise ship. Accommodations (with private bath) are comfortable but simple.

9th day-Sunday, October 22: In Palermo. Visit to Monreale (B/D)
Piazza Bellini, PalermoEarly morning arrival in Palermo. We will transfer to our accommodations, but as our rooms will not be ready, we start our visit with a walking tour through the narrow streets of old Palermo. Palermo was at the crossroads of civilizations for millennia and delivers a heady, heavily spiced mix of Byzantine mosaics, Arabesque domes and frescoed cupolas. This is a city at the edge of Europe and at the center of the ancient world, a place where souk-like markets rub up against baroque churches, where date palms frame Gothic palaces, where the blue-eyed and fair have bronze-skinned cousins. Centuries of dizzying highs and crushing lows have formed a complex metropolis. Here, crumbling staircases lead to gilded ballrooms and guarded locals harbor hearts of gold. Just don’t be fooled. Despite its noisy streets, Sicily’s largest city is a shy beast, rewarding the inquisitive with citrus-filled cloisters, stucco-laced chapels and crooked side streets dotted with youthful artisan studios. Here we will view the ornate Piazza Bellini, the Cathedral and the Byzantine mosaics in Monreal churchArab-Norman Palatine Chapel. Return to our hotel for lunch on our own and check into our accommodations. In the afternoon we board our coach and proceed to Monreale, slightly south of Palermo on a panoramic upland overlooking the Conca d’Oro and the Oreto River valley. We visit the Cathedral (Santa Maria la Nuovo) begun in 1174. This cathedral was built at the order of William II. The interior walls of the Cathedral are completely decorated with 50,000 square feet of precious Byzantine mosaics. We return to Palermo over the scenic, history steeped Monte Pellegrino for our overnight and dinner at our hotel.

10th day-Monday, October 23: In Palermo. Excursion to Agrigento (B/L)
Agrigento Greek templeAfter breakfast we depart for Agrigento. The morning will be spent visiting one of the most important Greek historical sites in the world: the breathtaking Valley of the Temples, including the largest Doric temple in the world, and the Temple of Jupiter. Even travelers who have visited Athens and Delphi in Greece are awed by the gigantic yet graceful Greek structures that have survived 24 centuries of tormented history. We stop in Piazza Armerina for lunch before returning to our hotel in Palermo for dinner on our own. Venture to experience some of the wonderful local restaurants.

11th day-Tuesday, October 24: To Mount Etna and Taormina (B/L/D)
Mount EtnaWe start our day by traveling to the top of Mount Etna, over 5,000 feet high. It’s the highest and the most active volcano in Europe. After lunch we proceed to Taormina to visit the Ancient Greek- Roman Theatre. It is one of the most beautiful sites in the world with its well-preserved stones and stage and the snow-covered Mount Etna in the background. A bit of time to explore the town on our own before we have dinner at our hotel.

12th day- Wednesday, October 25: In Taormina and excursion to Siracusa (B/D)
Siracusa at sunriseAfter breakfast we depart for Syracuse (Siracusa in Italian) to visit the most beautiful Greek colony of Sicily. This area attracted the philosopher Plato and the Apostle Paul. At one time, its naval fleet was feared throughout the Mediterranean. Here our visit will include the famous Latomie of the Garden of Paradise, the Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre and the Ear of Dionysius known for its extraordinary acoustics. We continue on with a visit to the island of Ortigia, the small baroque old city center of Siracusa, built by the Aragonians. Return to our hotel for dinner and our overnight.

13th day- Thursday, October 26: In Taormina. Excursion to Noto d’Avola (B/L)
Noto, SicilyAfter breakfast we depart for Noto and Nero d’Avola for lunch and a wine tasting. Noto is a magnificent baroque town and is famous for its opulent architecture and beauty. Caffe Sicilia gelatoNoto was founded at the time of the fall of Troy. We will have lunch at a local well renowned farmhouse that will feature both an olive oil tasting and a wine tasting. Afterwards we return to Taormina where we have the evening on our own to enjoy some local dining at one of the town’s restaurants.

14th day-Friday, October 27: To Catania (B/D)
Piazza Duomo CataniaThe last town we visit on our Sicilian itinerary is Catania, one of the most picturesque cities in Sicily. Its landscape is dominated by Mount Etna which gives the city its suggestive lava rock palate. After our arrival and some free time for lunch on our own, we will meet at our hotel and have a panoramic tour of the baroque town including the Roman Amphitheatre, the Duomo with its beautiful Cathedral and the Opera House. The city is affectionately named Mamma Etna, which is seen by locals as both a blessing and a curse. Etna is viewed as a symbol of fertility that although it destroyed the city several times during its history, it has also given Catania some of the best wines in the world. Its mouthwatering cuisine drenched with this agriculturally fantastic flavor will be enjoyed at our farewell dinner at a local countryside villa.

15th day-Saturday, October 28: To JFK (B)
After breakfast we will transfer to the airport for connecting flights back to New York via Milan and board our Emirates jet with the same day arrival at JFK and then back to the East End.

4th Day, Monday, April 10: In Paris: Excursion to Normandy (B/L)
Normandy WWII memorialAfter breakfast we board our coach for Normandy on the coast of northern France where Allied troops landed on 5 beaches along the coast as we remember the heroes of the D-Day landings. World War Two bunkerBut, on Omaha Beach, they faced heavy enemy fire in terrain that left them vulnerable; vertical cliffs were another obstacle that led to the loss of life. American cemetery NormandyWe’ll also view the Memorial Peace Museum and the American Military Cemetery, which will be one of our most emotional stops, if not the most emotional. With 10,000 white crosses throughout, the name of a fallen soldier is engraved on each. This huge cemetery will make you aware of the colossal death count of D-Day. You’ll have time to look around the cemetery, visit the wall of the missing and awe-inspiring memorial. Then lunch in Normandy and then board our coach for the return trip to Paris where we have the evening on our own.

5th Day, Tuesday, April 11: In Paris: Day Free for Exploration or Optional Tour Half Day Morning Tour to Versailles or Full Day Excursion to Mt St Michel (B)

There will be a morning excursion to Palace of Versailles as you are brought back to life at the Palace of Versailles where, from 1682, Louis XIV officially installed the court and government of the Kingdom. You will discover the Great Royal Apartments, the Hall of Mirrors and the Queen’s Apartments. There will be some free time at the end of the excursion to stroll through the French gardens surrounded by sculptures (statues, busts, marble vases) made from 1661 by teams of sculptors initially supervised by Charles Le Brun, the King’s leading painter. Return to Paris in the early afternoon.

mont st michelFor those who prefer a full day of optional touring, it’s a visit to Mont Saint Michel. Prepare to be stunned the moment you first set eyes on Mont Saint Michel. One of the great treasures of Normandy – nay, all of France! – it crowns a tidal island in the English Channel in Gothic splendor. Once the home of a wandering Irish hermit, the spot later became a Breton bastion against Viking raiders, eventually growing into a sprawling monastic community and castle complex by the Hundred Years’ War. These days, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which you’ll tour as you will see a masterpiece of Gothic architecture dedicated to the Archangel Saint Michel. This Benedictine abbey is uniquely beautiful, just like its superb cloisters with their peaceful atmosphere. Its dark corridors contrast with the incredible light illuminating its newly remodeled central garden. Our guide will take us through the mont saint michelvarious rooms of the Abbey, spread over three floors, explaining the daily life of the monks and the history of the building. We’ll see the cellar where the provisions were stored, admire the majestic chimneys of the Salle des hôtes (visitors’ dining room) and tour the immense refectory where the monks shared their meals. After our visit to the Abbey, our guide will lead us outside, where we’ll have a chance to admire the exceptional view across the bay afforded by our vantage point at the top of this great rocky peak. We will have lunch in the region before boarding our coach for the return to Paris and an early evening arrival at our hotel.

louvre museum parisFor those not on one of the optional tours, spend the day independently exploring. Visit the Musee d’ Orsay, filled with impressionist paintings. Take a guided tour of the world-famous Louvre Museum, the largest art museum in the world and home to some of the world’s finest art collections, including two of the most famous creations, the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo. Or find a relaxing café and watch local Parisian life pass by. Paris is an incredible “walking” city, so there will be much for you to do and see. Stroll past fashion houses and boutiques on the Champs-Elysees. Shop for paintings in Montmartre. Or have coffee at a sidewalk café. This evening, you are on your own to experience one of the great local Parisian restaurants.

6th Day, Wednesday, April 12: Discovering the fairy-tale castles of the Loire plus a wine tasting (B/L)
Chambord castleToday we will explore the heart and soul of the French countryside on our Loire Valley Tour, taking you directly from Paris into this stunning region to explore fairy-tale castles, sample local foods and wines, and experience some of France’s most beautiful scenery. We’ll travel out of the city and towards our first site – Château de Chambord, the largest castle in the valley. Disney fans will recognize this castle as the inspiration for ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ You’ll hear about the strange history of this castle, once intended as a hunting lodge for a king, and climb the staircase that was Bloissupposedly designed by Leonardo da Vinci. Our next stop is the town of Blois, home of the Château de Blois, one of most prestigious Renaissance monuments in France. There you’ll have just under two hours to enjoy some free time visiting the Royal castle of Blois on your own, notable for its unique mix of Medieval, Gothic, Renaissance and Classical architecture. This Royal castle once was the home of kings Louis XII and François I and presents a tragic history, as the place where Joan of Arc went to be blessed by the Archbishop of Reims before departing with her army to drive the English from Orléans. Last but not least, we’ll head to the Château de Chenonceau for wine tasting – discover a wide range of chateaku chenonceauwhite and red wines, and even a sweet dessert wine, with tasting notes from a real expert and also a light lunch. Following this, enjoy the chance to tour the so-called “Ladies’ Château,” Château de Chenonceau. This elegant 16th-century castle makes a lasting impression. Don’t miss the spectacular and beautiful bridge that spans the river Cher. Originally used to hold balls and parties, it served as a hospital in WWI and was in use again in WWII, this time helping people escape from occupied France, crossing over the bridge and into free France on the other side. Return to our Paris hotel in the early evening and to have dinner independently at one of Paris’s great bistros.

7th Day, Thursday, April 13: To Provence and Avignon (B)

Sicily Tour

RMC presents
SICILY
Tour postponed to April 2023. New dates will be indicated soon

Sicily is also a delectable layer-cake of culinary influences, Sicily’s ancient cuisine continues to rely on a few key island-grown ingredients: shellfish and citrus, tuna and swordfish, pistachios, almonds and ricotta.

sicilian food

Sicily’s varied landscape makes a dramatic first impression. As if its classical heritage weren’t formidable enough, Sicily is bursting at the seams with later artistic and architectural gems. In a short walk around Palermo you’ll see Arab domes and arches, Byzantine mosaics and Norman palace walls. These cultural riches remain one of the island’s most distinctive attractions.

palermo piazza2nd day- Saturday, April 16: Arrival Palermo (D)
We connect in Europe for our flight to Palermo. Upon arrival, we will be escorted to our hotel where we have some time to relax before our welcome dinner.

3rd day-Sunday, April 17: In Palermo. Visit to Monreale (B)
After breakfast, the morning will be free for those who want to attend Easter services at a nearby local church. For those not attending church, it’s a morning at leisure. In the afternoon, we start our visit with a walking tour through the narrow streets of old Palermo. Here we will view the ornate Piazza Bellini, the Cathedral and the Arab-Norman Palatine Chapel. Then we board our coach and proceed to Monreale for a visit to the 12th century Norman Cathedral, famous for its 50,000 square feet of precious Byzantine mosaics. We return to Palermo over the scenic, history steeped Monte Pellegrino. Dinner on our own this evening and a chance to experience some of the wonderful local restaurants.

4th day-Monday, April 18: To Agrigento (B/L/D)
After breakfast we depart for Agrigento. The morning will be spent visiting one of the most important Greek historical sites in the world: the breathtaking Valley of the Temples. Even travelers who have visited Athens and Delphi in Greece are awed by the gigantic yet graceful Greek structures that have survived 24 centuries of tormented history. After lunch at a local restaurant, we will have the afternoon free to do some independent exploration and shopping before we have dinner at our hotel.

5th day-Tuesday, April 19: To Mount Etna and Taormina (B/L/D)
We start our day by traveling up to Mount Etna’s top, over 5,000 feet high. It’s the highest and the most active volcano in Europe. We will visit the Silvestri Craters – five extinct craters and enjoy their panoramic scenery. Then we will experience a special treat as we have lunch and a wine tasting at the Mt Etna vineyards. Mount EtnaThe vineyards are a unique wine growing area that has gotten a lot of attention recently. Its dark volcanic soils, high elevation, snow on the top of the mountain for five months of the year and the Mediterranean Sea nearby create singularly distinctive wines.

6th day- Wednesday, April 20: To Siracusa (B/D)
After breakfast we depart for Syracuse (Siracusa in Italian) to visit the most beautiful Greek colony of Sicily. Return to our hotel in Siracusa for dinner and our overnight.

7th day- Thursday, April 21: In Siracusa (B/L)
After breakfast we depart for Noto and Nero d’Avola for lunch and a wine tasting. Noto is a magnificent baroque town and is famous for its opulent architecture and beauty. Its 18th-century cathedral is a local highlight, as is Caffe Sicilia, which is rumored to make some of the best gelato in all of Italy. We will have lunch at a local well renowned farmhouse that will feature both an olive oil tasting and a wine tasting. Afterwards we return to Siracusa where we have the evening on our own to enjoy some local dining at one of the town’s restaurants.

8th day-Friday, April 22: To Catania (B/D)
The last town on our itinerary is Catania, one of the most picturesque cities in Sicily.

9th day-Saturday, April 23: To JFK (B)
After breakfast we will transfer to the airport for connecting flights back to New York. Same day arrival at JFK and then back to the East End.

THE OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY

including a Danube River cruise to Hungry, Austria, Slovakia & Germany. Plus stays in Salzburg & Munich and experiencing the Passion Play

To be Rescheduled

Oberammergau tour highlights

Join Father Tom on this special journey that will start with a cruise on the Danube River with stops and Masses in Budapest, Vienna, Bratislava, Melk & Passau. After our 6-day cruise, we will be visiting Salzburg and Munich along with a special production of the Oberammergau Passion Play which is performed once every 10 years.

Our journey starts in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, where we board our Danube River cruise ship. Embarkation won’t be until 6pm, so we’ll have lunch and a city tour before we are welcomed onboard. The next day we have time in Budapest for Mass before we set sail for the Republic of Slovenia and to Bratislava, a Medieval and Gothic old town featuring a mosaic of illustrious history. Continue cruising to Vienna, Austria’s capital. In addition to our city touring, we will have a Mass in St Stephen’s Cathedral. This monolithic structure stands proud in the Stephensplatz and is the most important church in Vienna. Then we continue on the Danube to Melk with its Benedictine Abbey that has been at its site since 1089. Our last cruise stop is Passau, a beautiful little town on the Danube with a University and the outstanding St. Stephen’s Cathedral, named for the first Christian Martyr and known for the world’s oldest organ. We disembark our cruise ship in Passau, and continue to Salzburg, the “Sound of Music” city for a tour and special Mozart Concert in a setting overlooking the city. Our tour ends in the capital of Bavaria, Munich. Between Salzburg and our stay in Munich, we will be in Oberammergau to witness the special Passion Play that relives the last moments in the life of Jesus.

Note: We only have a limited number of cabins for the cruise and seats for the Passion Play. Once booked, the tour will be Sold Out. We urge early reservations so as to not have to wait another 10 years to experience one of Christianity’s most remarkable events.

A word about the Passion Play

Oberammergau passion play state

A play of life and death, promised in a moment of mortal threat. So began the history of the Oberammergau Passion Play. In 1633, in the middle of the Thirty Years War, and after months of suffering and death from the plague, the citizens of Oberammergau made a sacred pledge that every 10 years they would perform a “Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ” if God would protect them from the plague. Legend has it that after the vow was made, there was not even one further case of Bubonic Plague in the village and those town members who already were afflicted, recovered. In the year 2020, the Community of Oberammergau will again perform the Passion Play, which they have preserved throughout the centuries with singular continuity. Since 1634, it has been performed every 10 years without interruption for over 380 years, (except during World War II).   As per special local law, all the actors of the world’s largest amateur dramatic performance come from the village. All participants, from actors playing the big speaking parts such as Jesus, Mary or Judas, to members of the choir, orchestra members and ushers, must have been born in Oberammergau or lived there for at least 20 years.

Return to our ship on our own for lunch followed by a relaxing cruise on the Danube to Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital since the country’s independence in 1993. Overnight in Bratislava onboard our cruise ship.

4th day: Wednesday, July 29: Morning in Bratislava. Afternoon Cruise to Vienna (B/L/D)
BratislavaThis morning we arrive in Bratislava. After breakfast, we start our day with Mass at the old St. Clara’s Church. Then we will enjoy a combination of the Old Town tour and Castle Tour. On the way we will see the Slovak National Theatre – Opera House and home of the Philharmonic, magnificent churches, the upside down Pyramid, Grasalkovich palace and St. Martin’s Coronation Cathedral. Then we will come back to the Old Town with its unique historical monuments. Owing to its historical importance, (it has been a world cultural heritage site since 1996), beautiful location, magnificent architecture and the Schönbrunn Palace splendid layout of its gardens, this palace is considered the top sight in Vienna. A special gem is the baroque style park surrounding the palace. After our visit, what better way to be introduced to Vienna than with some Applestrudel in the “Schönbrunn Old Bakery”, an old time romantic cellar. 6th day: Friday, July 31: Morning in Melk. Afternoon Cruise to Passau (B/L/D)
Melk AbbeyMorning cruising on the Danube as we pass old castles and small villages situated in the beautiful Wachau Valley before arriving in Melk, best known as the site of a massive baroque Benedictine monastery named the Melk Abbey. The town is first mentioned as Medilica in 831 at the coronation of Louis the German. Afternoon arrival in Melk. After lunch, we tour the Abbey founded in 1089 as a Benedictine Abbey where monks continue in this tradition for over 900 years. No tour of monasteries in Austria or Middle Europe for that matter, would be complete without a visit to the magnificent Melk Abbey. Abbot Berthold Dietmayr and his architects Jakob Prandtauer and Joseph Munggenast left no stone unturned in their quest from 1701 to 1736 to construct a sacred palace upon the foundations of a medieval monastery. The library is a treasure in itself, due to its valuable manuscript collection and to the beauty of its architectural design. Hopefully we will be able to have a Mass at the Abbey before returning to our cruise ship as we continue to Passau. Overnight onboard our cruise ship.

7th day: Saturday, August 1: Disembark our Cruise Ship and onto Salzburg (B/L/D)
Continue our cruise into Passau, once described as “one of the most beautifully situated cities in the world” due to its remarkable position on the confluence of three rivers. After breakfast, we disembark our cruise ship and board our coach to the “Sound of Music” city, Salzburg. Lunch is on our own. We meet again for an afternoon walking sightseeing tour of the UNESCO-protected Old Town seeing landmarks including the Cathedral, Mozarteum and St. Peter’s Cemetery, whose colonnades famously provided hiding for the Von Salzburg shopsTrapp family in the 1960 Sound of Music musical. We walk along the cobbled Getreidegasse shopping street and learn about Salzburg’s most famous former resident, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as we pause outside the composer’s house. See the Mirabell Palace and its gardens, the backdrop to the famous ‘Do Re Mi’ scene in The Sound of Music, and take in the views of the Hohensalzburg, the hilltop fortress looming over the city. Return to our hotel where after a time to refresh ourselves, we will take a small local train up the mountain overlooking Salzburg for dinner followed by a wonderful Mozart concert. Overnight in Salzburg.

8th day: Sunday, August 2: To Oberammergau. Afternoon & Evening Passion Play (B/D)
Oberammergau passion play stageDepart Salzburg in the morning for the village of Oberammergau and our reserved accommodations in one of the many nearby villages. We have lunch on our own before being shuttled to the Passion Play theater. In 1633, the residents vowed that if God spared them from the bubonic plague, they would produce a play thereafter depicting the life and death of Jesus. Performed during years ending in zero, it is considered as one of the grandest in the world. The production involves over 2,000 performers, musicians, and stage hands–all residents of the village. They rehearse for over six months and present the play over 100 times during a performance year. The open-air theater adds to the magic of the show. The play begins at 2:30pm. We will have dinner during the 3-hour interval between Part # 1 and Part #2 in a restaurant in Oberammergau or the local area, before returning to the theater and the conclusion of the Play which will end about 10:30pm. Return to our hotel for our overnight.

9th day: Monday, August 3: To Munich (B/D)
old St. Peter’s Church, MunichAn early morning departure for Munich. After checking into our hotel, we have a bit of time to have lunch on our own before departing for our afternoon city tour. We will start at the old St. Peter’s Church, where Father Tom will perform Mass, then continue to enjoy an orientation tour through this lovely city We will travel past Prinzregentenstrasse, Maximilianstrasse, the exclusive shopping street built in the Neo-Gothic style. Then onto the ‘medieval’ part of Munich with the Old and New City Hall and the Viktualienmarkt. Continue to the Opera house, the Royal Square in Neo-Greek style, and the Alte Pinakothek, Munich’s most famous art gallery which contains one of the largest Ruben’s collection in the world. Then drive through the Olympiapark, site of the 1972 Summer Olympic Games. This evening, we will have dinner at a real German Pub, the“Bratwurst Glockel am Dom.” Overnight in Munich.

10th day: Tuesday, August 4: In Munich (B/D)
DachauThis morning we have a tour to uncover the history behind the Nazi concentration camp at Dachau. Outside the town of Dachau, a memorial site stands on the grounds of the former concentration camp. Dachau was the first Nazi concentration camp in Germany during the Holocaust, and it was the originator and training ground for the vast order of brutality that spread over half of Europe in the wake of the armies of the Third Reich, and which ultimately culminated in history’s greatest crime. On this half-day tour, you’ll spend around three hours exploring the memorial site with your guide. Ratskeller MunichTour the exhibition center and former compound, and learn about the history of Dachau, World War II, and the Holocaust. See reconstructed barracks, guardhouses, cells, crematorium, and administration headquarters, and take a moment to reflect at the site’s memorials. While each camp was responsible for its own particular form of barbarism, what distinguished Dachau is that almost everything that happened in the system as a whole happened at some level there. Return to Munich for a free afternoon. Our farewell dinner will be at Munich’s famous Ratskeller restaurant in the town’s old City Hall that opened in 1867 and has treated guests in its rooms with Bavarian specialties for many years. PORTUGAL

August 6 – 14, 2021

Portugal is a vacationer’s dream holiday for so many reasons.

We will start off in the charming city of Porto, with its stunning Beaux-Arts station and cool bars serving Porto’s signature drink. This charming city combines the best of old and new with beautiful 18th- and 19th-century buildings, indie bars and restaurants — it’s hard to find anything to dislike about Porto.

Everything in this wonderful city makes this trip memorable, from the Cathedral to the Port Wine Cellars, where you’ll have the chance to have a tasting. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit places filled with tradition and culture and you’ll be given important details about the streets and squares of its historic center. Afterwards have the afternoon and evening on your own for independent activities.

4th day: Monday, August 9 – To Fatima & Evora (B/D)
We leave Porto this morning and first depart for Fatima, a Center of Catholic faith and world pilgrimage site. Here we will learn how this former village evolved into an influential Catholic Pilgrimage site in 1917 after three children claimed to have witness and apparition of the Virgin Mary. Our guide will explain the details of this lady that later became known as “Our Lady of Fatima”. We will visit the Shrine that over 4 million worshipers travel to every year to pay homage. Then to Evora the capital of the Upper Alentejo, and a World Heritage. Evora is a walled since the Roman times, Évora is characterised by its Moresque streets, white houses with flowered balconies, and paved patios. From its rich past, Évora has kept many Medieval and Renaissance palaces that make it a museum of Portuguese architecture. Soon we arrive at our accommodations and our dinner at the Convento Do Espinheiro. A note about our accommodations: The origins of the Convento do Espinheiro are connected to a legend that tells of an apparition of the Virgin Mary above a thorn-bush (espinheiro) around the year 1400. In 1412, an oratory was built in honor of Our Lady and finally in 1458, during the reign of King Afonso V, and due to increasing pilgrimage, a church and convent were built and settled by monks of the Order of St. Jerónimo, who stayed here until 1835.During the 15th and 16th century, this convent was frequently visited by the Portuguese monarchs such as King John II (who held court here in 1481), King Manuel I, King Afonso V and King Sebastião, who, when in Évora, stayed at the convent by invitation of the Monks.

5th day: Tuesday, August 10 – In Evora (B/L/D)
This morning’s sightseeing tour of Evora will start at the old quarter and Giraldo Square, with its 18th century marble fountain. Then to the Roman-Gothic Cathedral, built in the late 12th c. early 13th c, to the Roman Temple built in the 2nd century. and dedicated to Diana; the Convent of Lóios., the Palace of the Duques of Cadaval and the very beautiful Church of São Francisco (16th c.) containing the gruesome Capela dos Ossos (chapel of bones). Afterwards, we board our coach and head for Alentejo, where time here passes slowly, as the Alentejo follows the rhythm of the land itself. Perhaps this is why the region’s culture has its own particular character closely linked to the production of wine and olive oil. Today we will be visiting one of the most famous wine estates in the region: HERDADE DO ESPRORÃO founded in 1267, and has remained virtually unchanged, despite being the stage of bloody battles and heroic deeds over almost nine centuries. In the center of Herdade do Esporão, three historic monuments stand: the Esporão Tower, the Esporão Arch and the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Chapel, the latter related to intense and devout popular worship in the region that involves local people to form processions when the rains are late. The Esporão Tower, an assertive symbol in society and a demonstration of military strength, is one of the most important towers in the region, illustrating the transition from the Medieval to the Modern Age in Portugal. At the Estate, we will have a wine tasting plus a tasting of 3 regional Herdade Esporao olive oils. This is followed by lunch at a local restaurant before returning to Evora for dinner at our Pousada and our overnight.

6th day: Wednesday, August 11 – To Lisbon (B/L)
Our first stop after we leave Evora will be Sesimbra, situated at the foot of a southern slope of the Serra da Arrabida, a pleasant resort where we will enjoy lunch at one of the harbor restaurants. After lunch, onto Lisbon. However, before entering in Lisbon, we visit the statue of Christ in Majesty, a small replica of the one in Rio de Janeiro. From the Pedestal (access by a lift) which is 240 feet above ground level with its panoramic view over the Tagus Estuary. Arrival soon in Lisbon, a city that dates back some 3000 years. In its fascinating lifetime, Lisbon has been a battlefield for Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians before the Romans arrived in 205 BC. In 714, the Moors conquered and stayed till the 12th century. In the 13th century, Lisbon became the capital of Portugal. Today, Lisbon, still maintaining the marks of its early history, is one of the most beautiful capitals of Europe. Dinner on your own in one of the many exciting local Lisbon restaurants.

7th day: Thursday, August 12 – In Lisbon. Tour to Sintra (B)
After breakfast, our morning tour will start with Belem, where many Portuguese explorers embarked on their voyages of discovery. The Belém Tower, built in 1514 to commemorate Vasco da Gama’s famous sea voyage to India is dedicated to all Portuguese explorers Then to the Hieronymites Monastery, classified by UNESCO, along with the Belém Tower, as a World Heritage Site in 1983. No visit to Belem would be complete without trying some of its legendary pastries. The recipe for Belém Pastries is one of the best kept secrets in Portuguese gastronomy. The pastries have become an attraction in themselves. Everyday around thousands such cakes are sold from this café which dates back to 1837. Afterwards our coach returns to city center for lunch on our own. Then in the afternoon, we depart for Sintra. Few places in the world can evoke a sense of magic and mystery as does Sintra, which is dominated by steep mountains, lush forests which create a microclimate atmosphere and Disneyland-like palaces with neo-gothic towers, On this tour we visit Quinta da Regaleira, an estate classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the “Cultural Landscape of Sintra” (and also one of the models for the Disneyworld Castle). It’s considered one of the principal tourist attractions of Sintra. The property consists of a romantic palace and chapel, and a luxurious park that features lakes, grottoes, wells, benches, fountains, and a vast array of exquisite constructions – a perfect setting for an unusual guided tour! Return to our hotel where we have the evening free to experience some of the city’s great dining spots, or take an optional Fado dinner and show (see details below).

8th day: Friday, August 13 – In Lisbon (B/D)
Today is at leisure and Lisbon is a great city for independent exploration. Start at the Praca do Comercio, one of the few extravagant areas of the city with stately pink arcades that line the 3 sides of the plaz (the 4th is open to the harbor). Maybe go to the Baixa with its shops and small restaurants. Or Roissio, Lisbon’s main Square. Visit the Castelo de Sao Jorge, the old citadel of the Moors, or the 13th century Igreja de Santo Estevao. Stoll Old Lisbon or visit one of the many museums. In the late afternoon we will depart along the “Estrada Marginal” to see cosmopolitan Cascais, once a small fishing village, but its idyllic scenery has now attracted the attention of artists, writers and expelled European nobility in the 20th century. Then continue with a panoramic view of Estoril, a scenic resort, known for its famous Casino that was the inspiration for the first of Ian Fleming’s James Bond books, “Casino Royale,” before sitting down to our Farewell to Portugal dinner and then returning to our hotel. For those who want to visit the famous Casino, you can try your luck and then take the fast train for a 40-minute rode back to Lisbon.

9th day: Saturday, August 14 – In Lisbon – Tour Ends (B)
After a leisurely breakfast, you have most of the day at leisure for some independent exploration. In mid-afternoon, we depart for the airport to board our non-stop flight home. Upon arrival and after clearing Immigration and Customs, we depart for the East End.

Greece

RMC presents CRUISING THE GREEK ISLANDS PLUS A PRE-CRUISE PROGRAM TO ATHENS AND MALTA October 18-November 2, 2018greece cruise

We start our tour in Malta, the Mediterranean’s best-kept secret with a history dating back over 7,000 years. The first settlers arrived around 5,000 BC. Over time, a great civilization developed producing incredible feats of architecture. Around 870 BC, the Maltese Islands were colonized by the Phoenicians, probably the greatest traders and seafarers of their time. Eventually it all became part of the Roman Empire where the Islands flourished. The Apostle Paul was known to have been shipwrecked here in 60AD. We will have four days of exploration and free time.

Then off to Athens—the birthplace of western civilization—for three nights to explore the wonders of Greece highlighting the Acropolis, the Parthenon and the Theater of Dionysos that combine the vestiges of the country’s golden years to today’s modern lifestyle.

We are off to start our Greek Island cruise. As mentioned in the announcement letter, we are going to cruise the smaller, lesser-known Saronic Islands. This will allow gentler cruising in calmer waters to spend more time exploring islands with the same incredible history and artifacts found on the higher trafficked islands, thus experiencing the charm that only smaller Islands can offer. Places like Aegina, with its quaint village of Perdika. Epidaurus, which is considered rustic Greece at its best. Poros, with Poseidon’s Temple, and where Henry Miller wrote: “To sail slowly through the waters of Poros is to recapture the joy of passing through the neck of the womb. It is a joy too deep almost to be remembered.” Stops also include Romantic Spetses and Hydra, the “gem of the Aegean.” Our cruise ends at the idyllic and charming Island of Agistri.

We will have our breakfasts and lunches onboard, a few group dinners on the islands, as well as some free evenings in port to eat out on our own at local restaurants.

3rd day: Saturday, October 20 – In Malta (B/L)
This morning we start our day with a full day of touring. First will be a walking tour of one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, known for its baroque architecture, palaces, and churches. This UNESCO World Heritage site dates back to the 1500s, when the Knights of St. John founded the fortress city. Over the years, it became home to buildings designed by top European architects of the era and renowned works of art. Learn about all of this from your guide as you walk past landmarks such as Parliament House, the ruins of the Royal Opera House, the Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens, Auberge d’Italie, Auberge de Castille, St. John’s Co-Cathedral, the Great Siege Monument, Strait Street, St. George Square, Grandmaster’s Palace, Piazza Regina, National Library of Malta, the Church of St. Paul’s Shipwreck, the Siege Bell War Memorial, and Fort St. Elmo – National War Museum. As you go, hear little-known stories about what it was like to be a patient at the Holy Informatory, or a galley slave on the ships of the Order, and whether all knights behaved in accordance to their vows. After about two hours, you’ll have a deeper perspective of Valletta. As the tour concludes, our coach will meet us and we depart for lunch at a local seaside restaurant. After lunch, our coach takes us to Hagar Qim, the prehistoric site that overlooks the wide expanse of the blue Mediterranean and the islet of Filfla. Head next to the dazzling Blue Grotto, a cluster of brightly lit caves on Malta’s rugged south coast. Here, we join an boat excursion to see inside the caves. If time, we visit the Maltese fishing village of Marsaxlokk. Amble about the postcard-perfect village and snap photos of the candy-colored iuzzus (fishing boats) moored off the coast before we return to our hotel and a free evening.

4th day: Sunday, October. 21 – In Malta – Excursion to the Island of Gozo (B/L)
Today we have a unique way to see Malta as we journey to the sister Island of Gozo. Some say it’s “Malta’s prettier little sister” as it is more rural and greener than the island of Malta. And, we will be seeing it on 4×4 Quads. We will board our Quads and follow our guide through the countryside, riding through valleys and around bays, stopping at scenic viewpoints to snap photos and learn about the area through our guide’s commentary. Highlights will include fabled Calypso Cave, Belvedere, the Inland Sea, Ta’Pinu, Xlendi, and Marsalforn Bay. We pause to refuel with a 3-course lunch, and then taste some local produce and shop for souvenirs before we return back to our hotel on a powerboat ride, stopping by the Comino sea caves, which are the glistening jewel of the Blue Lagoon. This will be an amazing day. Our evening is free to explore on our own and try some of the great local restaurants.

5th day: Monday, October 22 – In Malta (B/D)
A Free day for independent exploration in Valetta, which is really a “Tale of Two Cities “the Old and the New A tale of two cities – the old and new. Like most of Malta, Valetta has been strongly influenced by a variety of cultures and nationalities. Most significant was the impact of the Knights from the Order of St John and also the British. Built on a hill, between two harbors, the Old city has fortified giant walls to protect it from those who wanted to conquer it. The walls still contain many tunnels and air raid shelters that were built and utilized during World War Two. Modern Valetta is the heart of Maltese commercial activity, and yet it remains at the heart of the Maltese community and provides a cultural anchor. The center of Valetta is a large grid formation with 12 parallel streets, many of which provide views of the harbor. Built on a hilltop, the streets can be reasonably steep and many still contain the original stone steps, built to help the Knights with their heavy armor ascend the hill. These steps are made from the hardest stone on the island, allowing them to stand the test (and feet) of time. You may also want to visit the Malta Classic Car Museum. It is a must for car enthusiasts, and this flexible admission ticket means you can spend as long as you like admiring the exhibitions. The impressive collection has more than 100 classic and vintage cars and motorcycles on display, including a 1955 Jaguar C Type, a 1972 Fiat 500F, T-Birds, and Spitfires. Or visit Fort Renella, or take a morning optional tour of Christian Malta (see details below). In the evening we meet for our Farewell to Malta dinner.

6th day: Tuesday, October 23 – To Athens (B/D)
Our morning is free to relax and do some last-minute shopping. Then in the early afternoon, depart for the airport and our direct flight to Athens. Upon arrival in Athens, we will go through Immigration and Customs and then transfer to our hotel. Time to rest a bit before our Welcome to Greece dinner.

7th day: Wednesday, October 24 – In Athens (B/L)
Morning tour of including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Greek Parliament building and Presidential Palace, the home of Greece’s royals until the monarchy ended in 1974. We’ll see the Panathenaic Stadium, the venue of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Then drive along Panepistimiou Avenue to snap photos of the National Library and one of Greece’s most revered orthodox churches. After our coach tour, we visit two of Athens’ historical treasures on foot.
